Event Details

The Lifers, in collaboration with The Tare Shop, are offering a mending workshop on Sunday January 27th from 10am-2pm.  Mending is as a way for communities to understand degradation, hold it in their hands, and remediate it.  Through meditative and mindful stitches, menders can re-enter themselves as fragile beings, and find hope and ways to heal.  As Margaret Wheatley so potently said, “We cannot simply leap to new ways of being; first we must prepare for disintegration and collapse”.  Mending serves as both a practical and symbolic way to foster positive ecological change, emphasizing the importance of the human hand (or the absence of machinery and technology) in environmental care.
The Lifers are a harmony-based experimental folk/rock duo, recently nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award in the Emerging Artist category. Harp-inspired ukulele, guitar, and accordion drones and melodies are our typical accompaniment. Their ethos is to spread love and kindness to each other and to the Earth, through our words and our actions.  The Lifers are currently touring through the East Coast of Canada, launching their Earthly Intentions Book. They invite audiences to anonymously scribe an environmentally conscious intention into the book, in an effort to help people realize the impact that our national and international community can make together, in small but compounding ways. They are also connecting with local environmental initiatives along their journey in hopes to reciprocally support each other’s work.  Anita, one of The Lifers co-frontwomen, is also a textile artist, whose practice heavily revolves around mending.  She hopes to share this practical skill with audiences, to teach them a tangible skill to carry forward in their intentional, sustainable lives.
We ask that you bring a “hole to mend” to the workshop (aka, a ripped paid of jeans, a shirt with a hole, some worn out socks, a hole-y tea towel, etc).  If you have any sewing supplies (needles, thread, scissors, scrap fabric), feel free to bring those as well.  Supplies will also be provided at the workshop.
The night before, The Lifers will be performing at The Carlton as a part of the In The Dead of Winter Festival.  Information can be found on their website,
