Shampoos, Body Scrubs and Plastics. Zero Waste Washing Up

Often when we talk about being more eco-friendly in the bathroom, we’re talking about things like conserving water by turning off the taps while brushing or using filling up your mop bucket while the shower heats up. But there’s no end to the little plastic bottles and bags that can find their way into our bathroom trash. From #DIYToothpase to Shampoo bars, let’s talk about ways to go plastic free in the bathroom.

First things first: Use up your products

Listen, if you just bought a big bottle of a new shampoo or a brand new container of your all time favorite body scrub, we don’t want you to throw it in the garbage. Part of reducing the amount of plastic in the waste stream is making sure to not throw out products and packaging unnecessarily.

So if that product is working for you, use it up, and then consider taking that bottle or container to your nearest refillery/package-free bulk store and extending its life cycle even more.

Find refillerys/ bulk stores near you

Some package-free bulk stores like The Tare Shop carry wide varieties of bathroom and lifestyle products. And we love seeing people reuse old containers, it's one of the reasons we don’t sell new ones!

As long as the mouth of the container isn’t too narrow, anyone can come in and simply refill their old shampoo or body wash bottles from our bulk supply. If you’re interested in cutting out containers altogether we also have solid shampoo bars (and shaving bars for those who shave) made by local businesses!

Make your own

Whether it’s our upcoming #DIYToothpaste event with Plastic Oceans Canada or a simple sugar scrub you learned online, there is more information available than ever about what you need to make your own simple bathroom products.

Making your own products might seem like an impossible task but there’s lots of resources around and you may even find that you like making your own just for the sake of doing a simple physical activity that results in your own little self care kit.

We know, however, that the DIY lifestyle isn’t everyone’s thing. If you don’t have the time, or interest, to mix your own bathroom products there are Canadian companies like Nelson Naturals (who make our in-store Zero Waste toothpaste) stepping up to the plate as well.
