Valentine's day is coming up and with that an increase in a lot of waste – just like any holiday. In a three-day window around Valentine’s Day, 110 million roses are sold, almost a billion valentines are sent globally, and $1.7 billion is spent on candy.
This equals a TON of waste around the globe for just one holiday! While we LOVE celebrating love and our loved ones, here are some tips and gift ideas without waste!
Four tips for a more sustainable Valentines Day
- Make homemade cards or use seed cards: seed cards are so cool and they can be planted and grow wildflowers! We love upcycling old cards or getting crafty and making collages as cards! Getting a handmade card is so much more fun and meaningful!
- Buy dried flowers: dried flowers are so incredible and beautiful. They don’t need to be in water as they are dried, and last so long! I have a bouquet from last Valentine's Day that is still going strong at my house.
- Support local: buying locally made gifts instead of drugstore gifts is a great way to support your local makers and crafters! Check out some of your local crafters or stores for some great ideas!
- Gift an experience: instead of a wrapped present, gifting an experience is a great way to spend quality time with your loved ones. We love gifting sauna or spa days, trips to our favourite restaurants, cooking meals, or adventure dates!
